ONL Retirement Saves Big Bucks … In Cookies … that’s 4,545 Cases!
Did you know that by “retiring” the Ontario Newsletter (ONL) publication we have saved Guiding in Ontario the equivalent of the Unit profit raised on the sale of 4, 545 cases of cookies each year? The cost of printing and delivering the ONL was approximately $50,000 yearly. Our new Ontario Guider E-News costs nothing more than time for content writing and posting. Thank you for embracing our move to E-News and helping the cookie profits stay where they belong– with the girls!! And to think – we are saving trees too!
Your comments and feedback to our 1st edition were wonderful. We are happy that so many of you are enjoying E-News. For those of you that miss the traditional ONL, please know that your UA has a condensed version of E-News that she can send to you directly that gives you all of the information with just 1 click! The file is in the universal PDF format and easily printable.
We hope
you enjoy November’s
issue of Ontario Guider E-News!
Lisa Baxter
Provincial Communications Adviser
Would you like to feature something in next month's issue of Ontario Guider E-news? If yes, please send your article to our Communications Coordinator no later than Monday, November 19th for consideration.

Provincial Volunteer Opportunities – What’s New?UNIT SUPPORT: One of the aims of the community model is to provide more support to the Unit Guider and to provide more programming opportunities for the girls. One of the ways this will be accomplished is by Guiders with particular skills or expertise offering programs that a Unit can access. Based on the description of the program you are offering, the Unit Guider would contact you directly to make arrangements for you to visit her Unit meeting. For example, you love to knit and are willing to attend Guide meetings to instruct the girls. Perhaps there is a nature or historical site you would like to introduce the girls to it through an evening walk or Saturday visit. The provincial and national challenges would also make great programs to offer. In most cases you would go to the Unit but in others the Unit might meet you at a venue. You set the parameters. Whatever you are interested in – whatever is in your location – whatever your imagination allows – whether you are a Unit Guider, a Member-at-Large, a Link or Trefoil Guild Member - we need your creativity! PROVINCIAL ANNUAL 2008 PLANNING TEAM: The planning is just beginning for another fabulous weekend on November 21 - 23, 2008! We are looking for four individuals who possess the following:

GGC Opportunity to Participate in Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against WomenOn December 6, 1989, fourteen young women were murdered in Montreal because they had chosen to study engineering, a male-dominated field. December 6th of every year is now Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
As well as commemorating the 14 women whose lives ended in 1989 due to their choice of career, the Day of Remembrance and Action is a reminder to all Canadians that gender-based violence is still a reality for many girls and women.
With dating violence often starting before the eighth grade, and many girls witnessing or being subject to violence at home, our girls need to be educated about how to support friends who may be victims and how to avoid becoming the targets of violence themselves.
Girl Guides of Canada’s National Board has chosen several cities across Canada, including Toronto, in which to pilot participation in the National Day of Remembrance and Action. Members of any age in Toronto are encouraged to earn the new National Day of Remembrance and Action patch by participating in an activity designed to raise girls’ awareness of gender-based violence during the week of December 6th. This could include:• a ceremony to commemorate the women killed on December 6, 1989
• a self-defence course
• a unit meeting or special event at which the girls learn about violence against women, stereotyping or healthy relationships via discussions, activities, a speaker, etc.
• visiting a shelter for abused women
• a service project for a shelter for abused women
• watching and discussing a movie or show that addresses violence against women
• a father-daughter “white ribbon making” event
• participation at some of the events hosted by other organizations in Toronto (watch the media and the Community Events section of the Ontario Council Events Calendar at http://www.guidesontario.org/events/eventspage.htm#E for ideas)
• any age-appropriate activity that will make girls reflect on gender violence or the attitudes that contribute to such violenceTo receive patches for yourself or your unit, have one Guider e-mail amy.porteous@gmail.com by November 25th to briefly describe your event and estimate the number of members who will participate. After the event, send another e-mail to confirm that the event occurred, the number of participants and the mailing address for the patches. Photos of the girls participating in the event(s) are most welcome.

membershipsupport.adviser@guidesontario.orgGuiders, do you know that there are less than 60 days to Christmas!
These are exciting times for the girls in your units. I am sure that you have had a successful registration season and that your units are still OPEN for any new members. I know that Screening teams within your Communities are working diligently, interviewing and checking references, since I am one of them, for our Potential members. I am so excited seeing and hearing about the new young new young women who are interested in giving back to their communities by working with our girls in our Communities. Safe Guide and Orientation to Guiding trainings are springing up all over Ontario. I am so anxious to get the census numbers! Can you tell that Membership in Ontario is so important to all of us?As I mentioned, the holiday season will soon be here. Activities that will make your Fall programming exciting are in abundance for the girls. Of course Halloween gives us the time to PARTY; Fire Hall visits give us the chance to get out into the Community and receive important information; Remembrance Day activities in the Community with the Parades are fantastic; Service projects for the holiday season, such as visits to the Nursing homes with caroling or visiting the seniors are always a simple but wonderful experience for the girls no matter what age they are. Please participate within your Community with the girls, keep the girls’ interest in the programme sparked for the New Year and get our organization known within your community.
To our brand new Guiders, THANK YOU! for joining and please be aware that there is always help for you when you need it. We have many experienced Guiders who are Mentors just waiting to help you. So if you feel a bit lost or confused, contact your Administrative Community Leader or Unit Administrator or the Membership Support Coordinator and ask about getting a Mentor.
Experienced Guiders, THANK YOU. You may also need some direction this year with the new way of work in Ontario. Please do not hesitate to call or email your Unit Administrator or Administrative Community Leader, or your Provincial Link or Trefoil Adviser. Remember, whether we are a new member of only a few months or a Guider of 30 years we will all have questions.
For Unit Guiders, your Administrative Community Leader and Unit Administrator are very important people for you. Get to know them they are your immediate resource. Please feel free to email any of the volunteers in the Membership Department- see addresses above.
Besides working with Membership in Ontario, I am also the National Adviser for Public Relations. Please visit the National website as there are many resources there for you to download and use. There are ready-made articles, radio and video tracks for you to give to your newspapers, radio or TV stations in your local areas. There are great posters, postcards, pamphlets and programming ideas. Please visit the site and take advantage of these great resources. If you are participating in an event to grow membership, Ontario Council can supply you with bookmarks and brochures. Contact Marilyn Worth, Membership Development Coordinator.
When your unit is out in the community it would be great to notify a reporter from your local newspaper to come and take pictures and place a story in your newspaper, more ways to get well known. If this is not possible designate one of your Guiders or a parent that likes to take pictures and write articles and submit them yourself. Newspaper publicity is one of the best ways to let people know about Guiding!.
All the best this year and please let me know how you are doing. I love to receive news from the Guiders of Ontario. It also gives me direction on where to focus our attention.
Yours in Guiding
Barb French

Administrative Community Leader - check out this new opportunity!
Meet two of our ACLs
Yvonne DeBruyne – Community 36
Yvonne lives in Thunder Bay, and has been an adult member of Guiding since 1998. She has been a Guider with Sparks, Brownies and Guides, as well as a District commissioner. These are her thoughts on being an ACL.Chris Motsch and Margo Speilbacher (Community 5)
Chris Motsch and Margo Speilbacher were both Guiders in a Brownie Unit in Walkerton, and now share the ACL position. Chris, who also is the contact Guider for a Ranger unit, tells about her ACL experience. Please click here to read!
Chris Motsch & Margo Spielmacher will be holding an upcoming Guider Meet & Greet. Please click here for more information.
The Administrative Community Leader (ACL) is the volunteer lead for each community. She works closely with the Unit Administrator to provide support to the Unit Guiders. For instance, the ACL is responsible for welcoming women to Guiding and ensuring that potential members are screened and placed in Units. She signs off on the membership subsidy forms, but does not sign your Safe Guide forms. She works with the Provincial Specialty Communities that are responsible for Learning and Development, International, Cookies, and Program to coordinate offerings to Guiders and units. She keeps her Unit Guiders aware of the volunteer opportunities in Guiding, and is the first contact for issues that may arise in units. The ACL role is not the same as the past Commissioner role, so the ACL does not have a community council. Local specialty communities will take on the task of organizing events within the community. The ACL works in partnership with Guiders who will assist her in some of her duties.
We continue to look for women interested in taking on this very important role. If you would like to learn more, contact Susan Birnie at birnies@guidesontario.org. Your help is needed to make Guiding the best it can be!
News from Community 34!
Community 34 had two very successful "Kick Start" Socials in August and September to welcome back Guiders, and to welcome new Guiders into our Community.
We have approximately 15 new Guiders that have had their screening completed, and their trainings have been going well. There are approximately 10 still in the screening process.
We are gearing up for two important events here in Community 34. One is the Sudbury Santa Claus Parade on Saturday November 17. Our float theme is "Under the Northern Lights with Santa". Cookie cartons are going to come in handy to build an igloo for the float!
There will also be a Girl Awards Ceremony to be held on November 21 at the Greater City of Sudbury Council Chambers starting at 6:30 p.m Girls will be receiving their Lady BP, Chief Commissioner’s Gold, Canada Cord and Commonwealth Awards. We encourage any Guiders who would like to attend, to join us and share in this special evening for the Girls.
For more information, please contact Dawn Moore at acl.34@guidesontario.org
Community 3Guiders from Community 3 are all doing a wonderful job learning the new way of Guiding after a great summer break. Many are busy with fall activities such as camping, visiting a Corn Maze, planning Halloween parties, visiting the local fire halls and library. Linda MacDonald and I, Sue Avey, enjoyed meeting some of you at our Meet & Greet evening in September. We currently have 148 Guiders in our growing Community as 20 new Guiders have joined us. Remember if it isn't fun it isn't Guiding.
We will be having a Canada Cord ceremony for Communities 21, 22, 23 and 30 on November 4th at Kingsview United Church in Oshawa. It is being organized by the Silver and Gold Trefoil Guild. The ceremony will start at 2:30pm
For more information, please contact Melanie Leblanc at melanie6697@rogers.com
Julie Rose and I are XXXcited about meeting our Guiders attending the Let's Get Creative Day this Saturday in Port Dover. We'll have gifts for you from Province and Community 9. We'll be in the pale blue tees with the big "Cloud Nine" image, so look for us and introduce yourselves! What we're hoping you'll gift to us are your ideas, suggestions, and wishes. What do you want to call our community? What logo? What mascot? Cloud Nine is just a sample! Do you want to get together? When? Where? How? Would you like to be on a team putting plans together? What trainings do you want? When? Where? What do you wish we'd address? Ecetera! Ecetera! Ecetera! See you're not the only ones with questions ... we've lots too! We want you to know we're open for business and listening! Drop suggestions off at our table, or email either of us.
Julie at: unitadmin.9@guidesontario.org or Liz at: ACL.9@guidesontario.org
We've heard the complaints about too many emails ... for our Community, we'll try to limit ourselves to a monthly e-bulletin ... bulletin in addition to the provincial e-news so if there's anything you want to have us broadcast within the community, send your requests to Julie. To get maximum coverage, our deadline schedule will be two weeks off-sequence from Province's deadlines. That way, two news broadcasts a month ... with the fervent hope you'll at least browse both! It'll be coming to you personally ... in your inbox ... but you do need to read them! Our first broadcast will provide feedback from your suggestions at Port Dover and include the schedule for inclusions. Won't devise one now ... you might have suggestions about that too! Below are three pictures of the event.
Novelty and tradition combine in Beijing, China’s buzzing cultural and political capital. Skyscrapers mingle with temples, traffic zooms around walled gardens, punk music provides the bass line for birds singing in their bamboo cages. In Xi’an terra cotta soldiers stand guard over the former imperial city, while sophisticated Shanghai invites visitors into its revitalized streets for a taste of the colonial past. Nine days of pure fascination.
