Queen's Diamond Jubilee Challenge

Background:

The Diamond Jubilee (60 years) marks Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne of Great Britain and six other countries (Australia, Canada, Pakistan, South Africa, Ceylon, New Zealand) following the death of her father King George VI, on Feb. 6, 1952.

Challenge Goal:

Earn 60 points (one point for each year of her reign) to complete the challenge. Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada does not have a specific crest for this Ontario Council developed activity. However, there are Diamond Jubilee crests for purchase available online on the UK Girl Guide website that you can order (Note: Duty is charged on orders).

Challenge Activities:

Service: (30 points)

Gather items for "Birthday Boxes". Gather items that would contribute to a child's birthday (cake mix, icing, candles, streamers, balloons, paper plates ,etc.). Pack everything in a Girl Guide cookie case and deliver the Birthday Box to a local shelter. Make as many Birthday Boxes as you can! You can add a theme to the box (princesses, cars, soccer etc.) or design them for a girl or boy. Your birthday box can make a big difference in a child's life.

Drama: (20 points)

Dress up in your finest garden party attire. Don't forget your gloves and hats! Host a tea party for your Unit. Try speaking with British accents, hold your pinky finger out while sipping your tea and don't forget to use your best manners.

Bridging: (10 points)

Invite another Unit to you tea party. Celebrate with other members of the Guiding Royal family. Invite friends and family to enjoy your hostess skills.

Active Living: (10 points)

Play a historical game! Try any of the following, but do it "English-style" - use some online resources to find rules, instructions or British skipping chants. Try croquet, badminton, cricket, polo, rounders, skipping or Alley Alley Oh.

Food and Drink: (10 points)

Prepare and sample Queen Elizabeth's favorite drop scones (click here for recipe) and sample a cup of tea. Nothing tastes better than a cup of tea with milk and sugar served in a real china tea cup!

Music: (5 points)

Learn and perform "God Save the Queen". Sing it loud! Sing it proud!

Arts and Crafts: (5 points)

Make and wear a fancy "Fascinator" hat. Use any type of craft materials available. Share your creation with your Unit.

Technology: (5 points)

Complete the digital scavenger hunt. Find pictures on the internet of the ten "Jubilee-themed" items. You could complete this challenge at home, while visiting a public library or perhaps using a computer at your meeting place.

Awards & Recognition

The presentation of awards and recognition is part of the girl core program in the form of pins, badges and certificates as well as praise from others. Adult Members also receive awards and recognition through nominations by other Members. There are both national and provincial awards.
